We all love our kids and want the best for them. We want them to have the best lives possible and have careers that they love. When they are born we all have visions of them attending college and in some cases even following in our footsteps. Let me say that I am all for higher education but let’s face it, not all kids are college material. Some of you us did not attend college and we turned out just fine so give your kids the same opportunity.
There are many other career choices that include schooling other than college. There are trade schools and on the job training opportunities that can be just as rewarding. Consider this what if no one went to Cosmetology school to learn to do hair, nails, etc?
What if no one went to trade school or worked as an Apprentice to learn how to fix air conditioners, refrigerators, etc? What if no one learned how to work on cars from trial or error or from watching Dad in the front yard on weekends?
There are so many things that we take for granted but the reality is that we would be lost without some of our “day laborers”. If you look at your life and consider all of the people who make your life easier it is a wonder how we get along without the Dry Cleaners, Hair Dressers, Nail Tech’s and let’s not forget the guys at the car wash or the one’s who cut our grass and clean our pools.
It takes all kinds of people to keep the world moving; some college educated and some educated by the school of life. If your child comes to you with a dream that may be different than yours don’t demand that they live up to your ideas and goals but let them live their life. I always told Allison that it didn’t matter to me what she did with her life as long as whatever career she chose she was happy and was the best “whatever” that she could be!
